Curt Bradbury, a Little Rock businessman, and Benton Police Chief Kirk Lane will be the recipients of the 2012 Marie Interfaith Civic Leadership Award at 5:30 p.m. May 21 in the Great Hall of the Clinton Presidential Center at 1200 President Clinton Avenue in Little Rock.

Arkansas is number one in the nation in teen pain medication abuse. When his son Cameron took his own life after a lengthy struggle with addiction, including prescription drugs, Bradbury was determined to make the community more aware of the dangers of prescription drug abuse among teens in central Arkansas. Chief Lane led his community in a prescription drug take-back program that saw prescription drug overdose deaths drop by half after one year.

The evening will begin with light refreshments, followed by the award presentation and a panel discussion on the issue, “Killer in Your Medicine Cabinet: the Crisis of Teenage Prescription Drug Abuse” with Bradbury, Chief Lane and Little Rock Central High student Ryann Mitchell, moderated by the Rev. Stephen Copley.

The Marie Interfaith Civic Leadership Award annually recognizes leaders who mobilize people of different faiths and different segments of the community to address important issues facing Arkansas. Past recipients of the Marie Award include the late Mimi Dortch, 2005; Jim Davis, 2006; Grainger Williams, 2007; the congregations of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and Bethel AME Church, 2008; former U.S. Senator David Pryor, 2009; State Sen. Joyce Eliott, 2010; and Dr. Fitz Hill, 2011.

Members of the Marie Interfaith Civic Leadership Award Board of Directors are the Rev. Stephen Copley, Chair; Dr. Joel Anderson; Justice Robert L. Brown; Joyce Elliott; Rabbi Gene Levy; Derrick Smith, and Sarah Wacaster.
